(Welcome Letter from ADJ-L: the listserv of COCAL, the Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor)

Welcome to ADJ-L, the virtual home of the Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor (COCAL). Since the early-1970's the ratio of part-time faculty to full-time faculty has increased dramatically in most universities across the United States. The creation of these increasingly large pools of contingent academic labor is having a significant impact on our working conditions, and upon the role of the university. We are becoming an increasingly polarized multi-tiered work force. Hopefully, this e-mail list will serve as a forum where adjunct faculty, graduate student employees (GTAs, RA's), temporary and non-tenure track full-time, and their friends can discuss the proliferation of part-time teaching in higher education, exchange information, and come to grips with these national/international trends.
